PPG Statement: EU packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR)

03.06.2024 | General

PPG Member of the Executive Board (CCO) Marco Geith: “The wording of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has now been agreed between the EU institutions and no fundamental changes are to be expected.

In principle, we welcome this regulation with the aim of reducing the volume of packaging in general and promoting the reuse of materials.

It is important to note that the EU Commission, the EU Parliament, and the European Council have come to the conclusion that restrictions for parts of the out-of-home market (HoReCa/on-site consumption) only apply to single-use plastic packaging and specific product areas.

This means that portion packaging made of other materials (such as paper-based packaging) can be used without restriction even after 2030 and thus continue to use the enormous advantages of portions – such as the avoidance of food waste, the hygiene advantage and practical handling.

The areas of social catering and take-away are also exempt from any restrictions in this context.

We already use sustainable packaging material for a large part of our portfolio and have set ourselves the realistic goal of adapting all our packaging accordingly in order to comply with all the requirements of the regulation.”
